Update 01July2012

I didn't know anyone was watching! I had to turn off my TWiki installations because they were under active attack, and updating TWiki has become an agonizingly complicated and time-consuming task. I didn't even think about this site, as I didn't know anyone was still using it. Thanks, iCabbers, for your continued interest. I'll let you know if I ever have to bring the site down again.

I haven't been able to lurk the iCab list in many months, but I have noticed that this documentation still gets the occasional update. I've moved my TWiki to a new server and upgraded the TWiki software. Let me know if you are experiencing problems. And someone should feel free to create a WebLeftBar topic! -- RonRisley

About This Project

On or about 24 September 2001, a cry rose up from the unofficial iCab mailing list (icab@yahoogroups.com) for better documentation for this most excellent alternative browser for Macintosh operating systems. Several people had suggestions, but most were agreed that they would prefer that the iCab development team work on improving the program, and that the task of preparing documentation could at least partially be distributed among dedicated users.

I had just become a new daddy (to Matthew Quinn), so couldn't contribute as much as I'd like. I did, however, have some server space available so suggested running a TWiki where iCab users could collaboratively work on the documatation.

I don't have a privacy statement up yet, but I promise not to use your user information for anything beyond maintaining this site. You should be aware, though, that posting your email address on any web site exposes it to abuse. You'll notice that I have some simple address-munging features in place, but they aren't foolproof. Obviously, particularly as this is a completely volunteer project, I can't be responsible for any losses or damages caused by your use of this site. Remember, too, that I'm not in control here, you are. Any other user could come along and change what you've written, though TWiki does maintain a change log. Still, my servers could lose data or I might cease to be able to provide this service with no notice whatsoever. You have been forewarned!

How Do I Use It?

Browsing

Anyone can browse the iCab TWiki. It should look just like a normal web site, with links and a search engine.

Contributing

The real value of the TWiki, though, is that anyone can add to or change anything on the site! It isn't trivial, but it is much simpler than learning HTML and having multiple authors trying to maintain and HTML site.

At its most basic level, all you have to do is click the Edit button at the bottom of each page and you can edit the text of the page. You don't need anything beyond your copy of iCab (or other modern browser). If you need to add screen shots or other graphics, use the Attach button. More advanced users will want to add their own pages with links to and from other pages. The TWiki editing format, while worlds simpler than HTML, is still very powerful and you can create complex pages, graphics, tables, forms, etc.

Before you can change anything, you must register at TWikiRegistration. Read the basic instructions at WelcomeGuest. Most of all, give it a try. If you really mess it up, you can always email me and I can back out your changes.

I don't have a privacy statement up yet, but I promise not to use your user information for anything beyond maintaining this site. You should be aware, though, that posting your email address on any web site exposes it to abuse. You'll notice that I have some simple address-munging features in place, but they aren't foolproof.
